Let’s take a closer look at the Promessa collection. Prawiro readily admits his love for vintage sports chronographs, specifically the Heuer 1153 - the Promessa manages to avoid feeling too derivative at a time when derivation is all to common from brands both big and small.
While certainly vintage-inspired - and Mr. Soldat’s freshman collection, dubbed Promessa, is made up of three chronographs, all designed in Switzerland by Studio Divine and manufactured in Japan and powered by Seiko’s NE 88 automatic chronograph caliber. That’s largely contingent on the price - most mechanical chronograph movements are expensive, and popping a 7750 inside a watch case isn’t always feasible for brands who feel more secure operating on the lower end of the pricing spectrum.

Compared to more rugged designs like the Bulova Hack and even the Hamilton Khaki, the SRPG27 is also somewhat more refined, making it a versatile and affordable field watch to consider. Coming in at $275, the SRPG27 offers a proportioned 39.4mm case that slides in nicely between the 37mm and 42mm offered by its predecessors, while also getting a movement upgrade from the outdated 7S26 to the hacking and handwinding 4R36. Although at a slightly higher price point, the follow-up SRPG27 might be even better. Years ago, Seiko launched the SNK and SNZG collections, models that were considered by many to be some of the best in their price range when it came to automatic field watches.
